The Tale of the Shepherd Boy
Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, lived a young shepherd. His existence was unadulterated, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes among the single tree on the mountaintop were his constant co-dwellers. Day in day, guarding his responsibilities inculcated in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
But, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plan.
Tales of wild beasts preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One morning he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found no beast.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf did attack the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. website Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is hard to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
